Industry insured losses in US for Beryl could reach US$3bn - Verisk

The Extreme Event Solutions group at Verisk estimates industry insured losses to onshore property from wind in the US for Hurricane Beryl will range between US$2bn to US$3bn.

Beryl formed on the evening of 28th June, quickly becoming a hurricane on the 29th, and strengthening into a major hurricane on the 30th. The following day, Beryl passed through the Windward Islands as a Cat 4 hurricane and would go on to become a Cat 5 hurricane later that day, the earliest Cat 5 hurricane on record in the Atlantic. Beryl reached its peak intensity with 165 mph sustained winds on the 2nd July.

Widespread and prolonged power outages in Texas are likely to be a legacy of Beryl’s arrival in the state. Nearly 3 million households lost power in Texas from Beryl. The outages are anticipated to drive significant claims due to food spoilage, mould and losses to additional living expenses and business interruption coverages. Further, heavy rainfall led to roadways and homes becoming flooded throughout the Houston area and in portions of western Louisiana.
