HSE studies AI’s role in safety-critical decision-making

The Health and Safety Executive is looking into the ways in which artificial intelligence affects safety-related decisions in the infrastructure and process industries. The research is part of an initiative examining how the technology is reshaping critical workplace functions.

Professionals working in safety-critical sectors are being invited to share their experience of using AI in decision-making and problem solving, with a focus on identifying both benefits and risks.

The study, aimed at engineering and safety specialists, is being conducted on behalf of the regulator by Emlyn Square. Taking around 10 minutes to complete, the questions explore how AI tools are being used in safety-critical environments, and their influence on human judgement.

Findings will feed into the ThinkSHARP project, which is examining how AI is transforming cognitive work in industries including energy, manufacturing and infrastructure.

The project is funded by the AI Safety Institute through its Challenge Fund, highlighting growing regulatory interest in AI’s implications for workplace safety.

The survey, which must be completed by 17 April 2026, can be found here

Participants may also register their interest in follow-up interviews with the organisation.
