Govt gets to grips with UK AI labour market

The UK Government has begun carrying out research to gain an understanding of the current AI labour market, to help direct future strategy and policy in the field.

The research will examine the skills relating to AI and data science that organisations need; businesses' approach to employing and training AI and data science professionals; and the issues they face during this process.

Ipsos MORI will be carrying out the research from now until October 2020, and will be also be directed at businesses and charities without a dedicated AI or data science team.

The research is part of wider plans to grow the AI industry in the UK. In June, digital secretary Oliver Dowden announced the availability of 2,500 places on new AI and data science masters courses starting in this Autumn.

Speaking at the time of the lauch, science minister Amanda Solloway said: "From disease diagnosis to driverless vehicles, demand for a diverse new pipeline of talent in the AI and digital workforce has never been greater.

"By working with our leading universities and industry partners, I am delighted that we are providing students from all backgrounds the chance to upskill and help tackle some of the most complex challenges of our time."
