Magnitude 7 earthquake shakes Christchurch, NZ

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand in the early hours of Saturday, 4 September.

Significant and widespread damage to infrastructure has been reported, but there were no casualties.

A state of emergency was declared, and a curfew imposed in the city due to the threat of falling debris and aftershocks. Aftershocks of 5.2 and 5.4 magnitude were recorded on Sunday night, followed swiftly by smaller tremors, according to local TV network, TVNZ.

Cases of looting were also reported; the army is to enforce a no-go zone in the heart of the city to prevent further instances. The central business district is to remain cordoned off while buildings, roads and pipes are safety checked, with the state of emergency extended until midday on Wednesday.
