Canopius launches cyber war cover for state-backed threats

Canopius Group has launched a cyber war product aimed at protecting businesses from the threat of state-backed digital attacks linked to geopolitical conflict.

The cover responds to a risk landscape in which cyber warfare can disrupt operations, compromise critical systems and weaken financial resilience, even for firms far removed from physical front lines.

The policy provides protection for state-sponsored attacks carried out during a physical war, as well as major cyber incidents attributed to state actors that significantly affect a country’s operations without a formally declared conflict.

Initially available on a limited basis, the cover can be purchased alongside a traditional cyber policy where Canopius is the lead primary insurer.

Camilla Walker, head of cyber and technology UK at Canopius, said: “Recent events have demonstrated how quickly regional conflict can escalate into widespread cyber disruption, with state aligned groups targeting commercial enterprises far removed from the physical front lines.

“We developed this product to provide clients with the option to extend their policies to include state-sponsored attacks that form part of a cyber or physical war.”
