Markel restructures international operations

Markel Insurance is repositioning its international operations, with its former wholesale and national markets divisions being restructured into five distinct businesses. By the end of this year, the firm will operate UK, London Market (comprising marine and energy, professional financial risks and cyber, and specialty), Europe, Canada and Asia-Pacific divisions.

Andrew McMellin, president of Markel International, said: “The structural changes we’ve announced today are about setting Markel International up for long-term success. They give each of the five new businesses the clarity and focus they need to grow and deliver for our clients and brokers.”

Markel has appointed Tom Hillier as chief underwriting officer to oversee these changes.

McMellin added: “Tom’s appointment as CUO is a key step in ensuring we have the right leadership in place to drive underwriting excellence and deepen our long-term partnerships with brokers and MGAs.”
