Ban on evictions for commercial tenants

As Boris Johnson ordered the closure of non-essential shops in the latest bid to slow the coronavirus pandemic, extra protection for businesses has been put in place.

A ban on evictions for commercial tenants who miss rent payments has been issued, offering essential support for many businesses who have seen a huge drop in earnings. The move will in turn help protect jobs across the hospitality and retail sectors.

The government's decision is hoped to provide a lifeline for thousands of firms facing a pending quarterly rental payment due to landlords on Wednesday, and the legislation will provide essential financial respite to many businesses.

Commercial landlords are already working closely with their tenants, but this measure ensures no business will be forced out of their premises if they miss a payment in the next three months. The law may also be extended in the future.

Business secretary, Alok Sharma said: “This measure will provide companies with an essential safeguard in these highly unusual times as they deal with the impact of coronavirus. This is part of the unprecedented package of support we have put in place to protect jobs and livelihoods right across the country.”

Communities secretary, Robert Jenrick, added: These new measures will provide reassurance to businesses struggling with cashflows and ensure no commercial tenant is evicted if they cannot pay their rent because of coronavirus over the next three months.”
