Chair: Cary Depel IRM

Cary is the director of compliance, legal and risk management at the ECU Group plc, an alternative investment manager. He holds non-executive directorships in mining, financial services and strategy consultancy businesses. Cary hasbeen a director of amajor UK stockbroker; chieflegal officer for the largest UK insurer; special counsel to Lloyd's, and was in private legal practice in London and San Francisco. He is a solicitor and is qualified to practice law in California, England and Wales. He received his BSc (management and accounting) and JD (law) from Indiana University and a LLM (corporate finance and banking law) from King's. He is a past chairman of the Institute of Risk Management.


The Director of Business Continuity Policy, Ministry of Defence
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is a large and diverse Government department employing some 180,000 members of the Armed Forces and around 100,000 civilian staff. Its size and complexity present a challenge in terms of business continuity management, and this case study demonstrates just how the MoD achieves success, and the lessons that can be learnt.


Chief Superintendent Alex Robertson, City of London Police
Alex has responsibility for operational planning, contingency planning, business continuity and counter-terrorism security advice. He also is responsible for the specialist operational services available to the Force, including the deployment of firearms within the City and the command and control of the Force's resources through the communications centre. Alex is an experienced public order and firearms incident commander, he has headed the tactical firearms group, and had responsibility the installation of a number of technological projects to support counter-terrorism policing operations.


Robert Runcie, Environment Agency

Robert is the regional director of the Thames Region of the Environment Agency. Robert took up the post of Thames Regional Director in December 2005. He is a chartered civil engineer by profession and has experience in the private and public sector, in this country and abroad. His commitment to sustainable development has been recognised both inside and outside of work withinterests including: Waterways Commissioner for London; membership of London’s Resilience Forum; Thames21 and Institution of Civil Engineers Policy Panel Member. Robert has said: "We cannot eliminate the risk of flooding. But one way to avoid creating a huge problem for the future is to work with Government and Local Authorities to avoid inappropriate development in areas at risk of flooding and to direct development away from those areas at highest risk. MPs are well placed to help ensure this happens."


 Chris Potter
Chris Potter is a partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC), based in London. After studying theoretical physics at the University of Cambridge, he joined PwC in 1986, starting his career as a financial auditor in the financial services sector. For the last 15 years, Chris has been auditing systems at financial services companies. He has increasingly focused on helping companies manage information security, a topic on which he is a frequent public speaker. From 2001 to 2008, Chris has co-authored the UK government (BERR previously DTI) Information Security Breaches Survey, and he also lectures on the Royal Holloway, University of London, MSc course on information security management. He is a founding associate member of the Institute of Information Security Professionals. Chris has helped clients to develop information security frameworks, implement secure Internet access and cryptographic solutions, and gain assurance over their security through penetration testing. Within PwC, Chris has overall responsibility for the quality of systems auditing work on all UK insurance audits. In this role, he has also led several engagements to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley s404, and advises clients on optimising their internal control.

 Simon Wheatley, LCH. Clearnet Group Ltd

Simon started in the financial sector with Wells Fargo Bank in 1974, from where he moved to Banca Serfin, and then financial controller at Postipankki, all positions with responsibility for operations, finance and systems. In 1989 he headed up the operations division at UBS in London, followed by three years in UBS’ Global Risk Management Control unit in Zurich, and a further three years as European Regional Internal Controller. Since 1998, he has worked in operations and risk management for BNP, ING Barings and Collins Stewart Tullett, prior to his appointment as director, regulatory liaison at LCH.Clearnet.

terrorism strategy (CONTEST).ú

Philip Virgo, Eurim

Philip is a sometime principal consultant at the National Computing Centre, with over thirty years experience of analysing ICT developments, predicting their consequences. He has experience of improving understanding between users, suppliers and politicians, and analysing policy related to the establishment of a socially inclusive and democratically accountable information society. Philip is the co-founder PITCOM (1981) and secretary general of EURIM.


Dr Matt Huddleston PhD BSc(Hon) FRMetS

Matt is the Met Office’s principal consultant on climate change - linking the impacts of climate to global business. He has a Bachelor's degree in Physics and wrote his PhD thesis on the Arctic ocean at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge and has worked as a climate modeller for 15 years, helping to build the very latest climate models. Has pioneered application of climate models to how our climate is changing now - helping develop seasonal forecasts for the UK and Europe, and of tropical storms in the Atlantic. In addition, Matt has visited both the Arctic and Antarctic on scientific expeditions in ice-breaking ships, including HMS Endurance.


Dr Gareth W Shepherd, World Economic Forum

Dr Gareth Shepherd, head of economic and financial risk in the World Economic Forum’s Global Risk Team, will present the viewpoint of the WEF vis-à-vis global economic risk, and the ripple effect of new risks on businesses.
