Communications minister Ed Vaizey has been singing the praises of cloud computing as having the potential to provide economic benefit to organisations and the public.

Speaking at the UK-China Internet Forum, Vaizey warned that security risks would need to be properly addressed if the potential from this technology can be properly harnessed.

In response, advocate of software-as-a-service, Andrew Miller, head of information security in government, PwC, said, “Ed Vaizey’s comments about the security and privacy challenges facing cloud computing are particularly apt. Whilst providers have been quick to articulate the commercial proposition to attract customers, the security models to protect customer information within the cloud architecture are currently lagging behind.

“Hopefully this message from government will spur providers to embed security within the cloud architecture rather than attempt to bolt it on later.”
