Tornado tears through Moore, Oklahoma

Authorities say that 24 bodies have been recovered in the aftermath of a tornado that ripped through the city of Moore on Monday.

This number is down from the 51 that had been reported earlier today. Talking to Reuters, Amy Elliott, chief administrative officer for the medical examiner, said this earlier number likely reflected some double-counted deaths.

Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing and the death toll is expected to in the coming hours as rescue teams expect to find people trapped under collapsed infrastructure.

According to reports, the tornado that affected Moore was classified as an EF-4 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which is second most powerful type of tornado. And, although there are currently no tornado warnings in place, the possibility of further tornados in the affected region cannot be discounted.

Multiple tornados have been affecting the West, Midwest and South regions of the US in recent days. On 19 May, two people were killed when another tornado affected the city of Shawnee, 65km east of Moore. Forecasts indicate that the storm system responsible for the severe weather is moving in an easterly direction and could continue to affect the region on 21 May.
