Sandy: Mandatory evacuations still in place in NYC

The situation in New York and New Jersey continues to evolve in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. According to the Department of Energy, more homes and businesses lost power during Sandy than any other storm in history, at over eight million. As of 6pm EST on Wednesday, 28% have been restored. Utility companies in New Jersey are reporting that the majority of customers should have electricity restored within 10 days, but total service restoration could take weeks in areas that are still experiencing flooding.

Mandatory evacuations are still in place in NYC, and across the Hudson River in New Jersey – most notably Hoboken, where the National Guard are encouraging remaining residents to evacuate due to the severe and ongoing flooding.

Some airports are still closed (for instance, La Guardia), while re-opened airports are operating at reduced capacity. As a signal of the disruption, the percentage of global flights cancelled due to Sandy was 19%, greatly more than Irene (8.5%) and Katrina (2.5%), and is second only to the Eyjafjallajökull volcano eruption and ash cloud (65%).
