Cabinet Minister Francis Maude today announced government plans to set up a ‘Cyber Reserve’ force to deal with the growing cyber threat. The force will be run by the Ministry of Defence and will allow the armed forces to “draw on the wider talent and skills of the nation in the cyber field.”
Maude, who was giving an update on the UK Cyber Security Strategy, highlighted the fact that internet-related business in the UK was now estimated to worth a staggering £82bn a year and accordingly to the 2012 PwC Information Security Breaches Survey, “93% of large corporations and 76% of small businesses had reported a cyber breach in the past year”.
Maude said that help was needed with “critical” work in combating online crime and promised efforts to make the UK “one of the most secure places in the world to do business in cyber space”.
“Government departments and agencies are working with professional and representative bodies to ensure the consideration of cyber security becomes an integral part of corporate governance and risk management processes,” Maude added.
