Markel appoints new MD for professional and financial risks

James Hastings has been appointed managing director of Markel’s professional and financial risks division. He replaces David Armes, who retired in December 2012 after more than 10 years with Markel.

Hastings joins Markel from QBE Europe where he has worked since 2005. In his most recent role he was an underwriting manager within the professional and financial lines division. Hastings was leading the specialist technology, media and telecommunications unit that he helped create in 2010.

Prior to that, Hastings was a senior professional indemnity underwriter managing large and complex risks for both QBE syndicates and insurance company. He has also worked for Hiscox as a professional indemnity, financial lines and commercial underwriter. James began his career with The Equitable Life Assurance Society after gaining a first class honours degree in business economics.
