London marathon to take place amid heightened security

The London Marathon is set to take place in London on Sunday 21 April amid heightened security. Following the two bomb explosions at the Boston Marathon in the US on 15 April, authorities in London have reviewed security arrangements for the London run and have increased police presence along the race route.

Crisis management firm Red24 reports that the heightened security presence is a precautionary measure and that that authorities have no concrete intelligence that would indicate an increased risk level for the marathon compared to previous years.

The event will involve extensive road closures, which are expected to cause travel disruptions across the city. The marathon will start at Greenwich Park, proceed along the River Thames and finish at St James's Park. Major roads scheduled to be closed include Charlton Way, Woolwich Road, Trafalgar Road, Jamaica Road, The Highway, Commercial Road, Upper Thames Street and Victoria Embankment.
