Increased risk of violent protest following reports of US ambassador death

Following violent protests in Libya and Egypt and the reported death of US Ambassador Stevens, deputy head of Middle East and North Africa Forecasting Firas Abi Ali has warned of increased risk of attack on soft targets in Tunisia, Lebanon, Yemen, Jordan, Egypt and Libya.

“The anticipated strengthening of security across all US diplomatic premises is likely to deter individuals from attacking US diplomatic assets to softer targets," says Abi Ali. "There is therefore an increased risk that self-starter jihadis in Tunisia, Lebanon, Yemen, Jordan, Egypt and Libya would use small IEDs or small arms to attack known American brands or western-looking individuals as they are travelling.

"Attacks leading to death and injury against individual westerners are far less likely than harassment on the street by protesters travelling to and from protest areas. However, western-looking individuals at protest sites are likely to be at higher risk of personal injury. These attacks are unlikely to be sophisticated or lead to mass casualties.”
