As of 16:00CET today, EUROCONTROL has confirmed the cancellation of approximately 500 flights from the approximately 29,000 that would have been expected today across Europe.

According to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) in London, today areas of high ash concentration were over northern parts of the United Kingdom.

There is a strong possibility, they said, that the ash cloud may impact parts of Denmark, southern Norway and south-west Sweden by tomorrow. This would have some impact on flights. However, given the new procedures in place and the predicted movement of the ash cloud over the coming days, the actual impact on flights is expected to be relatively low.

Grimsvötn: 250 flights cancelled over UK airspace
While there was no significant impact on flights yesterday as a result of the eruption of the Grimsvötn volcano in Iceland, predictions of a possible impact on parts of the UK, have been confirmed this morning, with about 250 flights cancelled over UK airspace. Since last year’s volcanic ash crisis, measures have been put in place to ensure preparedness for a similar event. Officials say the impact is unlikely be as extreme as that of Eyjafjallajökull twelve months ago.

Experts warn of future volcano-related disruption
Since the start of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption there has been much speculation about an eruption of its larger neighbour, Katla. In a report published today, experts from the newly formed UCL Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction warn that with the high frequency of eruptions of Katla, an eruption in the short term is a strong possibility.
