Etna prompts ash cloud concern

Europe’s highest volcano, Mount Etna, in Sicily, began erupting over the weekend, sending lava and ash up to five kilometres high.

Despite flights not being cancelled as yet, the first major volcanic eruption for 2012 has sparked new warnings about the importance of ash cloud cover when travelling. Only last month, scientists reported that the larger Icelandic volcano Katla was showing signs of a volcanic activity and earth tremors, potentially having much more of a global impact than the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull.

“On average, 50 to 70 volcanoes erupt globally each year and, in the first month of 2012, we have already seen Mount Etna start the year with a bang," said Greg Lawson, spokesperson for Columbus Direct.

"When choosing a policy, we recommend that customers check the policy wording as insurers may have different interpretations. You should ensure your policy covers both travel delay and cancellation due to volcanic ash and covers the total cost of the holiday. If you are not sure about the cover, we suggest you check with the insurer.”
