Cunningham Lindsey has set up a dedicated unit to tackle the increase in liability fraud. The unit will improve screening and validation methods to better manage the risk of fraud across all liability claims.
The growing risk of liability fraud was most recently underlined by ABI figures showing that detected liability fraud grew from £194 million in 2008 to reach £223 million in 2009.
The new Liability Claims Fraud Unit will be led by Neil Hanson, who joined Cunningham Lindsey from Plexus Law. Mr Hanson has more than 18 years’ industry experience and co-ordinates all suspect liability claims cases to ensure that the right expertise is employed on each.
Cath Williams, complex technical services director at Cunningham Lindsey, has overseen the set up of the unit. She explained: “Since it was set up four and a half years ago, our Complex Technical Services Unit has made significant savings for our clients, identifying £23 million of fraudulent activity in 2009 alone. The Liability Claims Fraud Unit is an extension of this successful model.
“We detected growth in liability fraud some time ago, and we have worked with our liability teams to address this threat by building on specialist expertise to establish a dedicated unit to tackle liability fraud, from the opportunistic to the very organised.
“In setting up a Liability Claims Fraud Unit, we are improving our screening and investigation techniques, and we hope to increase the profile of fraud in the liability sector.”
