Each week to help you in your entry process, we will share with you words of wisdom from previous winners from across the ceremony’s 14 year history, offering inspiration from the crème de la crème in your industry, demonstrating how they, and their organisations have benefited from their success at the industry’s main event.
Hear from Bill Crichton, Business Continuity Consulting Manager EMEA, Hewlett Packard EMEA.
Accolades:
Business Continuity Consultant of the Year 2004
Industry Personality of the Year 2006
Recognition in the category of Business Continuity Consultant of the Year was particularly important as it helped demonstrate that the consulting practice that I ran could be trusted to deliver quality to our customers. This often helped open doors when discussing potential assignments with customers.
With the Industry Personality of the Year award, I felt that the work I was doing giving something back to the industry via conference presentations, chairing of these events and my time as a director of the BCI were being recognized. Again, this gained me recognition both within my company and externally when dealing with clients.
What words of wisdom would you impart to those taking part this year?
Having been a judge back in 2001, I know how much time and effort is put in by the judging panel. Ensure that entries are kept fairly short and succinct taking care to properly highlight why you/your company should be the best candidate for a particular category. Like a CV, it is what stands out in the first few paragraphs on the first page that drives the reader to want to look more deeply into what the person or company has to offer in their submission.

In 2011, we won this award for the eighth time made all the more special by being the third time running. We’ve been nominated on 13 occasions, shortlisted on 12 and won eight times, and we’re fiercely proud of this track record, which lends undeniable credibility to and endorsement of our provenance and capabilities.

As our UK&I MD EVP Europe, Keith Tilley, expresses to staff:
“These are achievements of which we can justly be proud, born out of hard work, commitment and the tangible manifestation of our values. This is very much a team award and I’d like to thank each and every one of you for your personal contribution.”
It goes without saying that we were equally delighted to note that several of our customers had cause for celebration too.
What words of wisdom would you impart to those taking part this year?
With the quality and volume of entries rising each year, it is vital to be honest with yourself as to whether you can truly meet the requirements of whichever category(ies) you’re interested in.
If you are confident you have a contender on your hands, then: address each point specified, but make it easy for the judges by highlighting the key information; a picture can speak a thousand words, so use illustrations if this can better convey the message; and remember if you get bored reading through your submission, your reader will feel likewise, so try to get the enthusiasm, interest and what sets your entry apart evident from the off.

Accolades:
Most Innovative Product of the Year 2008
Winning the Most Innovative Product of the Year Award added credibility to our own views and statements about our product and the industry in general.
At the awards ceremony, the judges said iModus was “one of the most important tools for communication that the industry has”. The credibility that we gained from this statement has supported our marketing efforts and continues to do so.
What words of wisdom would you impart to those taking part this year?
Based on our experience, we’d recommend that entrants carefully select the category that they place an entry for. Allow for adequate time to craft it, and ensure that you have evidence and support your entry in order to give the judges reasons why you should win.
